Course Objective

 

  • Understanding International Politics: One of the main objectives of international relations is to understand the dynamics of international politics. This includes analyzing the behavior of states, non-state actors, and international institutions, and studying the causes and consequences of various global events and phenomena.

 

  • Promoting Peace and Conflict Resolution: International relations aims to promote peaceful relations among nations and prevent conflicts. It seeks to understand the root causes of conflicts, develop strategies for conflict resolution, and promote diplomacy and negotiation as means to resolve disputes.

 

  • Enhancing International Cooperation: International relations aims to foster cooperation and collaboration among nations on various global issues. This includes areas such as trade, environmental protection, human rights, public health, and terrorism. The objective is to establish frameworks, agreements, and institutions that facilitate collective action and address common challenges.

 

  • Safeguarding National Interests: States often engage in international relations to safeguard and advance their national interests. This may include promoting economic growth, ensuring national security, protecting sovereignty, and projecting influence and power on the global stage. The objective is to maximize national benefits while minimizing potential risks.

 

  • Promoting Human Rights and Social Justice: International relations seeks to promote and protect human rights and social justice on a global scale. This includes advocating for the protection of individual rights, combating discrimination and inequality, and addressing issues such as poverty, hunger, and access to healthcare and education.

Course Outline

 

  • State Sovereignty: States are recognized as the primary actors in international relations, possessing the authority and power to govern their own territories and make decisions on behalf of their citizens.

 

  • Power and Balance of Power: Power is a central concept in international relations, and it refers to the ability of actors to influence others and achieve their objectives. The balance of power theory suggests that stability is maintained when power is distributed among multiple states or actors, preventing any single entity from dominating others.

 

  • Diplomacy: Diplomacy is the practice of conducting negotiations and maintaining relations between states. It involves dialogue, negotiation, and the use of diplomatic tools to address conflicts, advance interests, and build partnerships.

 

  • International Organizations: International organizations, such as the United Nations (UN), World Trade Organization (WTO), and International Monetary Fund (IMF), play a significant role in international relations. They serve as platforms for cooperation, facilitate negotiations, and provide frameworks for addressing global challenges.

 

  • Global Governance: Global governance refers to the collective management of global affairs and the creation of rules, norms, and institutions to address common challenges. It involves the participation of states, international organizations, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and other actors.
