Course Objective

 

  • Understanding Global Dynamics: The primary objective is to develop a comprehensive understanding of the complex interactions among states, international organizations, non-state actors, and global issues. This includes examining the political, economic, social, and cultural factors that shape international relations and the dynamics of power and cooperation among nations.

 

  • Analyzing International Conflicts: Another objective is to analyze and understand the causes, dynamics, and resolution of international conflicts. This involves studying theories and concepts related to conflict and peacebuilding, as well as examining case studies and historical events to gain insights into the role of diplomacy, negotiation, and international cooperation in managing conflicts.

 

  • Exploring Diplomatic Practices: The objective is to gain knowledge and insights into the practice of diplomacy, including the conduct of negotiations, diplomatic protocols, and the role of diplomats in representing their states. This includes studying the historical evolution of diplomacy, diplomatic strategies and techniques, and the impact of cultural, technological, and political changes on diplomatic practices.

 

  • Examining International Institutions: An important objective is to analyze the role and functioning of international organizations and institutions in global governance. This involves studying the structure, functions, and decision-making processes of organizations such as the United Nations, regional organizations, and international financial institutions. It also includes exploring the challenges and effectiveness of these institutions in addressing global issues.

Course Outline

 

  • Theoretical Approaches: Students of International Relations and Diplomatic Studies are introduced to various theoretical perspectives that explain and analyze international relations. These may include realism, liberalism, constructivism, Marxism, feminism, and postcolonialism, among others. These theories provide frameworks for understanding the behavior of states, power dynamics, and global governance.

 

  • International Political Economy: This area focuses on the interaction between politics and economics in the international system. It examines topics such as trade, globalization, economic development, international financial institutions, multinational corporations, and economic policies of states. The study of international political economy helps understand the economic dimensions of international relations and the role of power and interests in shaping global economic outcomes.

 

  • Security Studies: Security studies explore the causes and dynamics of conflict, war, peacebuilding, and security policies. This area covers traditional security concerns such as military strategies, arms control, and deterrence, as well as non-traditional security challenges like terrorism, cybersecurity, climate change, and human security. It also examines the role of international organizations and diplomacy in managing security issues.

 

  • Diplomacy and Negotiation: Diplomatic studies focus on the practice of diplomacy, including the conduct of negotiations, diplomatic protocols, and the roles of diplomats in representing their states. It explores the historical evolution of diplomacy, diplomatic skills and techniques, public diplomacy, and the role of diplomacy in conflict resolution, crisis management, and international cooperation.
